Riyad Mahrez scored the only goal as holders Manchester City came from behind to beat Chelsea 1-0 in the third round of the FA Cup on Sunday.
A much-changed City side, with 10 alterations from the team which beat Arsenal last Wednesday, struggled to break down their stubborn opponents before Mahrez's moment of quality in the 23rd minute.
The Algerian cleverly lifted the ball over Chelsea keeper Edouard Mendy after being played through by a superb pass from midfielder Cole Palmer. Chelsea – who had won their last three games against City – started strongly and Marc Cucurella headed wide before Raheem Sterling, starting against his former club, had a shot charged down by City keeper Stefan Ortega. Pep Guardiola's men gradually gained the upper hand, though, and could have scored more, with Palmer and Julian Alvarez both going close. Mendy made a superb injury-time save to deny City substitute Erling Haaland, who had come on for his FA Cup debut, a debut goal. Victory means City will play either Oxford United or Arsenal in the fourth round.
